Fauré's Requiem

This setting of the Catholic Mass for the dead - traditionally offered for the repose of departed souls - has earned a place among the great Requiems of Mozart, Verdi, and others as an enigmatic classic of the genre. Whilst he had an obvious choice to delve into the morose, Fauré chose instead to communicate hope; pertinently, we'll be performing this at the start of Springtime. For PMF's interpretation, the Chorus will come together with St Gabriel's Church Choir for the very first time to form a booming 70-strong group worthy of the Requiem.

The response to its London debut the following year was less favorable. Only after performances at charity events for the Foundling Hospital did it gain public admiration in England, and its status as Handel’s finest work was recognised.

Mahler Symphony No.3

Hanna Hipp Mezzo-soprano
Philharmonia Chorus
Tiffin Boys’ Choir

Riotous, hallucinatory, extraordinary: Mahler’s Third Symphony knows no bounds, taking us from the smallest flower to the mystery of divine love.

Mahler’s famous quote about ‘embracing the world’ in his symphonies finds its fullest expression in this, his longest symphony. In six movements he charts the evolution of nature and mankind. The elemental power of summer is set against the delicacy of the natural world. And the dark night of the soul is broken by the sounds of angels and a ‘great summons’ to love more deeply than ever before.

A symphony filled with music of life-enhancing physicality and breathtaking melodic beauty, it is a story of such breadth and ambition that only Mahler could have dreamed of it, let alone write it.
